The following is an optimistic response by Kevin West to The Globe and Mail re: You’ll be hearing from my online paralegal, a cautionary article written by Gary Mason about the pressures facing today’s lawyers.

Mr. Mason’s son may be scared about the prospects of becoming a lawyer, as have generations of ambitious young professionals before him. But today’s new lawyers can ride the front end of the disruptive innovation wave. The barriers to entry for a lawyer to set up a law firm are now almost nil. The drive for “alternative” fee arrangements means that lawyers who are efficient can earn more than their lumbering counterparts. Technology and social networking allow lawyers and clients to nimbly find the right match.
Clients are looking for the right advice and are willing to shop around for it. Lawyers who are up to the challenge will find a very rewarding career.
